FOREST SCHOOL OF THE MARSHES

by Layla El Wadnakssi

The project is focused on integrating the natural landscape of the Marshes with the Victoria Wharf in Leigh-on-sea by building a primary school that teaches a Forest school curriculum. The use of natural materials such as Rammed Earth and ceramic tidal pools help to create a connection between the built environment and the natural surroundings. The emphasis on risk-taking and exploration in the Forest school curriculum is a great way to encourage children to engage with the natural environment and learn about the unique characteristics of Leigh-on-sea. The playful shapes and irregular building materials help to create a fun and interactive environment that is conducive to learning and exploration. The project seeks to incorporate the natural landscape into the design and materials of the building by utilizing Ram Earth, a mud playground, and ceramic tidal pools. These materials are used to enhance the existing landscape, providing an opportunity for children to navigate through the proposal and engage with diverse wet, dried, and fired materials and spaces. I aim to provide a primary school that will allow children to deveop through play and risk-taking, whilst teaching them skills to grow their own food, to build using natural materials and to be able to preserve the natural landscape of Leigh-on-sea for the coming generations.
