This project is based around the theme of Time and Remnants. It responds to the socioeconomic context of Gravesend by constructing a pier that gives the users activities to interact with the local river, riverbed, and historic blockhouse. They will find and collect remnants found through river diving, mudlarking and excavation around the buried blockhouse from 1539. These materials of mud and the remnants will then be reused to further construct the pier using vernacular construction means. The theme of time is expressed through the erosion of specific parts of the pier over time from exposure with the local tide, until it eventually becomes a remnant of the past, leaving behind sculptural pieces which reveal the core functions of the design and its interaction with the land.
