ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY PROJECT AT QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK

by Aaron Dwaine Philogene

The Project is a rock climbing gym designed for the former Olympic Park in Stratford. The site area is Bridgewater triangle (currently abandoned industrial park) located on the South side. The project building footprint is 3000m2 with the remaining space of given to landscaping to provide an interesting addition to the green space. The Climbing gym uses CLT and GLT for its structural members which are sourced from renewable and sustainably managed forests in mainland Europe. Locally sourced timber products reduce embodied carbon. Various strategies to utilise sustainable design were taken to ensure the project can reduce energy consumption. Swales, Ground & water source Heat pumps and solar PV panels were used to make use of renewable energy sources. Passive design allows the building to work with the sun path with south facing facades for natural daylight, deep overhangs and louvers shade south and east facades.
