BIRCHMERE PARK

by Cindy Duong

This project aims to activate Birchmere Park by providing recreational opportunities to the community. The park has an abundance of open green spaces and features a lake, but it lacks adequate facilities to meet the needs of residents and visitors to enjoy the space. The area is heavily used for sporting activities, and it is proposed that basketball and tennis courts be installed with a sports centre for indoor activity. A playground for the local youth population is provided, as well as a cafe to create a destination place for socialising with friends and family. In addition, to strengthen engagement with the waterfront, a nature pavilion is included as an educational facility to learn about the wildlife in the park. The proposal reshapes the public realm by beautifying the landscape with ornamental plantings that connect to the renovated community garden hub. Improving biodiversity was a key aspect of enhancing the existing wildlife at the park to appreciate nature’s tranquillity.
