The Women Collecting proposal presents a collective for women, by women. It addresses the lack of accommodation for women refugees in Berlin, specifically SO36 which is marked by material and psychosocial deprivation, by offering a new sense of community. It simultaneously addresses Berlin’s current environmental atlas with an air filtration chimney which runs through the core of the building and acts as a device within the city. Further, the women activate the collective through their gathering and re-use of recycled materials, reminiscent of the process undergone by Trummerfrauen, the ‘rubble women’ who reconstructed Germany post World War II.
