REINTERPRETING THE WALL

by Samuel McMahon

Reinterpreting the Wall collates various routes of research and exploration surrounding the film Les Misérables (2019). From the film's background to the lives of the movie's characters, Les Mis has been used as a modernist lens to view our site in Southwark, and it results in a mixed-use housing scheme with community room and kebab shop for Southwark's disadvantaged communities. The wall is paramount and serves the scheme in many ways be it forming boundary, structure, circulation, or experience. The spaces are designed to benefit the communities and are a direct challenge to the current plans for a hyper profit-motivated office, commercial, and premium housing scheme.
