GROWING HOMES

by Lilla Porkolab

An attempt to reconnect people in the city with nature and the process of growing our own food while adopting alternative sustainable construction methods, through a modular mycelium approach. Each residential unit within the community will have access to a private or shared vertical farming area, directly beside their own module - reuniting architecture and agriculture. When food is grown locally, the supply chain and use of packaging gets shortened. Stacked gardens reduce the need to convert forests and allows farmland to naturally restore itself. Heat that is produced can be re-used for plants and water treatment systems can be used to recycle nutrients. Food waste can be locally collected and composted. Growing Homes will also manufacture the mycelium panels integral to the construction of the hypercity, with in-house BIOmaterial production laboratories.
