THE 'RE'-COMMUNITY MARKET PLACE

by Will Rowe

As part of Group 3 in DS15, we imagined the radical transformation of the Wormwood Scrubs prison site into a residential neighbourhood for refugees arriving in the UK where they can find safety, opportunity and community. My scheme proposes a central covered market and life long learning facility at the centre of our masterplan. This project takes the experience of a refugee and applies it to the construction logic of an architecture by examining how found and reclaimed materials can be categorised and assembled through chance operations to generate intriguing, crafted spaces. For example the reclaimed, Portland stone, window sills found on site are repurposed to form stone columns that hold the canopy of a covered market. (This project is still in progress and is due for submission in July)
