THE SENSORY SECRET GARDEN SCHOOL

by Minaa Baig

The Sensory Secret Garden School is a single intake primary school located in North Lambeth, near to Waterloo Station, and adjacent to the Oasis farm (north) and Archbishop's Park (south). There are sycamore and plane tress on the southern boundary. The design is informed by Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel The Secret Garden, and Colin Ward's writings on children and includes the idea of encouraging children's exploration of nature. Parents’ engagement in the life of the school is enhanced by offering them space to n garden and socialise. The school provides framed views of the Oasis Farm growing beds, Archbishop Park trees and Waterloo railway track allowing the children to engage with city life beyond the school boundary. The building acts as a third teacher, allowing children to control lighting and ventilation. I have introduced the idea of views and secrecy within the classrooms.
