THE SCHOOL OF GROWTH
by Bryan Cotta
The project The school of Growth aims to engage not just children but the whole neighbourhood through a series of shared public spaces linked to the neighbouring Archbishop’s Park. Rejecting the isolated and enclosed layout of a typical school, the brief follows from Jane Jacobs work on city life to weave multiple activities around the shared space of the school gates and park boundaries. The design ideas explored are heavily driven from semester one designing a new revolutionary teaching space. The design is informed by Ivan Illich’s ideas of de-schooling, encouraging hands-on learning through gardening and practical activities.
