LIMEHOUSE POTTERY HUB

by Vinaya Kerai

The Limehouse Pottery Hub scheme aims to reveal the history of and revitalise the ceramic industry of Limehouse. The design provides an off-grid hybrid work-living environment model for the River Thames. Through a combination of art and industry, the project offers local potters an opportunity to earn a living and give back to the community by providing them with; workshops and housing, a pottery factory and a recycle station will collect and drop off waste materials to different locations along the river. The workshop spaces will allow the artists to work collaboratively with each other and members of the local community by facilitating them with pottery classes and workshops. The design incorporates a continuous platform which winds around the units, allowing visitors and users to wander through the spaces freely. The housing is designed around the idea of a cabin style house. The entire project is an off-grid scheme which begins to change how we live and work in our cities; it harnesses the power of the river by generating electricity to heat and power different components, each space provides a social or financial asset to its location and finally, every unit within the hub benefits from one another.
