when distilled, the idea behind the pub is a socially driven space which facilitates conversation within communities and becomes a hub for the people. the masons arms as well as several other public houses in the area of Walworth closed back in 2012 and was redeveloped into apartments. my project proposes an alternative route which gives the pub back to the local community and restores it to a hub for the people of Walworth, whilst also serving as a printworks for the use of the community. driven by the informal conversations in the public house. the printworks aims to facilitate change in local issues by providing an accessible screen-printing process where people can create; banners, posters, flyers, signs... for use in their causes. public printing house utilises part if the nursery row park which currently has little to no use. its prime location next to east street market, a key local staple, makes sure that the project integrated into the community. as well as restoring the old masons arms, the project rehouses local businesses; Abi styles and mum, an African fabric shop, and the barbers, integrating them into the scheme. Abi styles being able to use the printworks to print their own patterns. additionally, the barbers shop serves a double purpose also becoming a drying room for prints. personal interaction is also designed into the scheme with areas to hang banners and walls to paste posters on, furthermore a print exchange system which operates out of ‘print stops’ which store prints in plan chests and encourage people to take prints and paste them around the local area. this project is socially driven and celebrates the diverse and empowered local Walworth community, utilising an under-used and no longer loved part of the area, returning ownership to the people.
