Cagliostro’s Paranormal Case Files explores the narratives of a speculative future in which overpopulation of disuse of graveyards have blurred the lines between living and the dead in Palermo, Sicily. The project is divided into two halves, the first exploring the Future Ghost as a body in space and the second using the knowledge developed to generate a speculative design proposal. Situated north of Palermo’s Catacombe dei Cappuccini, the project proposes a Sustainable Necropolis that questions normative perceptions of death through designed space rather than the seemingly orchestrated narratives of the Catacombs. With the “Cathedral for Death” as the main focus, the project explores the superimposed Faiths of Palermo alongside sustainable burial processes that are geared towards redefining death as a sweet memory of life rather than a tragic end.
