THE ‘MYCENNOVATION TERMINAL’ VILLAGE

by Ramzi Ramzi

The development of the “Mycennovation Terminal” village was closely linked to the site organization of Wantsumville . The scheme was created with the goal of repurposing the abundant Manston airport terminal building and bringing new life and sustainability to the structure that would otherwise have gone unused or been demolished. The scheme showcases the use of mycelium-based bio-composite materials made from the root structure of mushrooms, which is part of a biological closed-loop cycle, resulting in minimal waste. The scheme serves as a platform to demonstrate the material’s current and potential future architectural applications throughout the space in various program functions. The scheme program comprises three zones that are introduced to meet sustainable goals of recycling and producing recyclable construction materials. (The Growing zone) which focuses on forest and agriculture, as well as food production and growing on logs and growing in underground tunnels chambers. (The Processing/Factory zone) which involves the production of mycelium bricks and research stations. (The Mycelium Village)which involves the creation of self-build mycelium brick houses and comprises a cluster of one-bedroom and two-bedroom houses along with communal areas.
