As humans live longer and longer, the retirement phase is now equivalent to a full quarter of our expected lifespan. And we want more from this final quarter of our lives than traditional aged care provides: we want healthier, more vibrant, more connected living. This co-living project aspires to play a part in this cultural change — and to show how inventive design can help the elderly to live better and longer. By introducing a second target group, students from Southend by Sea, the aim to bring more life into the retirement phase can be achieved. By sharing knowledge, encouraging physical activity, growing produce, and running a café open to the public, the two age groups can benefit from each other. The design plays on change in levels, the boundary between shared and private spaces, and all furniture is made to measure. My main inspirations are R.M. Schindler and The Wittgenstein Haus in Vienna.
