THE URBAN GROWTH CENTRE

by Annabelle Morel-jean

The Urban Growth Center is a mixed-use building and landscape project aiming to give access to various local fruit and vegetables for the new-built neighbourhood. Rising from the ground, the site is arranged and divided into ‘steps’ for sunlight and space efficiency. Following the concept of arches, their standard classical design has been distorted into a façade with tall, impressive arches, allowing for more daylight. The 280m-long project is divided into three parts: the main building, the orchard, and smaller spaces. While the proposal’s shape follows the existing site limitations, the orchard occupies most of the front area and allows a wide variety of fruits. The fruit trees were arranged according to their characteristics and their needs for them to thrive. The main building at the back of the site hosts hydroponics and is lit and passively ventilated by large atriums. On the site’s south side are smaller buildings designed for the community. The hydroponic library, communal kitchens and conference room are all linked with an indoor corridor for easy access.
