“MUDLARKERS DEN” - THE FORGOTTEN MEMORIES FROM THE RIVER

by Julia Lassota

This project is a unique space that celebrates the rich history and diverse finds of mudlarking on the River Thames. Located in Limehouse, it is a haven for mudlarkers to explore, learn, and create with the treasures they have found in the river. The Mudlarkers Den is a series of purpose-built spaces that come together to create an immersive building. At the heart of the project is a research and cleaning area where visitors can bring their finds and work together to research and piece together the stories behind their objects. Equipped with all the necessary tools and materials, expert researchers are on hand to provide guidance and advice. In addition, the building boasts an equipment room and a cosy sitting area where mudlarkers can relax and chat with fellow enthusiasts about their finds and share tips and advice. An exhibition space is also available, designed to be interactive and engaging, with multimedia elements that bring the stories of the river to life. Finally, the project features a workshop space where visitors can explore creative ways to repurpose their finds, from jewellery-making to mosaics, art, and beyond. Overall, the Mudlarkers Den is a vibrant and engaging project that celebrates the forgotten memories of mudlarking finds, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to explore and learn about this fascinating aspect of London's history.
