CONNECTING NEWHAM

by Esma Sharif

Focusing on the climate crisis caused by the building sector, this project highlights the need to recycle and reuse construction waste, in attempt to lower carbon emissions caused by the excess of imported construction material. Semester 1 proposes a network of prototypes that work as recycle centres for materials in context, while providing a haven for construction workers to seek shelter in from the warm summer months. The second semester’s project intends on a larger building hub, in this case an inhabitable bridge, providing art and gallery spaces for artists of Newham, along with a factory space working to test, create and produce new materials from construction waste. Both projects are made from sustainable materials, mostly timber, to highlight the new ways in which we construct and design architecture.
