ELEVATED CONNECTIVITY IN NEWHAM

by Natalie Atalla

Newham is a flourishing fast-growing borough with multiple potentials that could benefit the community. One of the projects being my proposed design. The reason why I got inspired to come up with this specific project are the key challenges the site is facing such as the low connectivity due to the rail being a barrier, low quality of green, high levels of PM2.5 and NO2, etc. The design consists of a pedestrian bridge with a cycle path that connects several warehouses’ roofs together in addition to converting some roofs into green roofs by implementing urban farming, outdoor seating, etc. The two exists of the bridge at Cody Docks and Star Lane park will include a lift so it could be inclusive and accessible by everyone, stairs, and finally bicycle facilities mainly provided for the construction workers since most of them cycle from far. The participation of the community in the project either through urban farming or the exhibitions hosted will improve the integration of the neighborhood and their sense of belonging since it will become part of their identity.
