PROJECT 1 - ITEM OF FURNITURE - "MULTI-STOOL"

by Amjad Butt

The project brief set forth for the Salvador Transformation Workshop entailed the development of a furniture design that could be readily manufactured on a large scale. The objective was to use recycled plastic waste, effectively addressing sustainability challenges, while simultaneously advancing multiple sustainable development goals. The overarching mission of the workshop is to alleviate the issue of plastic waste while bolstering the local community, particularly the women, by generating income through the sale of the resulting furniture. The design process commenced with an exhaustive examination of the available plastic waste materials, seeking to ascertain their viability for transformation. Rigorous research and experimentation were undertaken to determine optimal manufacturing techniques that would ensure both the durability and aesthetic allure of the final furniture items. Collaborating closely with the experts in sustainable design, the balance between functionality, affordability, and environmental consciousness is achieved. The resultant furniture designs not only fulfilled the criteria for large-scale production, but also embodied the ethos of sustainability and community empowerment. Each piece designed in this project was crafted to blend contemporary aesthetics with the distinctive cultural elements inherent to Salvador, fostering a profound sense of local pride and cultural identity. By repurposing plastic waste into functional and visually appealing furniture, the Salvador Transformation Workshop triumphantly realised numerous sustainable development goals. Their endeavours significantly contributed to environmental conservation by curbing plastic pollution, facilitated economic growth by creating income-generating opportunities for local women, and fostered social development by empowering and uplifting the entire community. Their steadfast commitment to sustainable practices and social impact sets an exemplary standard, demonstrating how creative collaboration can effectively convert waste into invaluable resources, ultimately benefiting both the environment and its inhabitants.
