THE CITY IN THE ROOM
by Suzana Meziad
The City in the Room aims to tackle the issues that women face in a patriarchal society, where their power is undermined and often remains unseen. This proposal aims to mobilise the women of Marrakech, embracing power in numbers as well as individuality, by creating spaces and typologies of collective commune and contemplation. Together, women will have a safe place to work, live and collect, surrounded by nature. The feminine garden will take over the region, in doing so, reclaiming the city as a place for women to occupy freely. The project aims to decolonise the image of women of the East, often depicted in the world as oppressed or in need of liberation. An architecture that facilitates spaces of empowerment and ownership. “There is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.” Virginia Woolf.
