ANTWERP ART ACADEMY

by Gyulhan

Located at the heart of the Fashion district of Antwerp, the proposed project is an extension built on top of the iconic Fashion Museum of Antwerp. The project intends to derive the famous historical craft of Antwerp during the 17th century by proposing an exclusive art Academy that will celebrate the craft of bobbin lace, teach contemporary lace art, and revive traditional bobbin lace techniques. The proposed compression structure is a vaulted ‘shell’ that will be robotically fabricated. The traditional craft of Bobbin Lace inspires the concept. A system that extrapolates from the traditional 2D craft of Bobbin Lace and extends its logic to 3D at architectural scale, utilising parallelised, coordinated fibre-fibre interactions to create nodes in a special network, combining the design space of lattice and surface-based structures. The academy will explore contemporary fiber art from lacemaking techniques. Lace makers will expand the traditional boundaries of art forms to create work that investigates contemporary themes, materials, and forms.
