REIMAGING NATURE AS A PRODUCTIVE FOOD SOURCE

by Roza Hassan

This project seeks to address the issues of lack of growing spaces in Beijing, as well as improving local’s relationship between nature. Looking at Beijing at an architecture/ urban scale, there is a gap in regard to green spaces for locals and residents, when it comes to the design of homes. This proposal is a new mixed-use housing development, which provides the opportunity for residents and locals to produce their own produce, rather than relying on supermarkets, which people have a sense of detachment nowadays, when it comes to food safety. There’s also a concern in regards of cost of living; most of china’s food source are imported due to widespread soil contamination, this makes produce relatively expensive. The generous private and community gardens provided on site helps tackle this problem, as locals can rely on their own gardens for produce.
