As you move from the hutongs on the left side, where unkept and communal growing spaces prevail, towards Galaxy Soho, a gradual shift occurs. Nature becomes more publicly accessible, with the introduction of lawns. Upon reaching the space between my proposal and Galaxy Soho, a stunning Chinese water garden can be found. This progression showcases the evolving relationship between the proposal, the city, and nature.

This detailed zoom-in moment provides a clear depiction of the proposal within the hutong context. It distinctly showcases two separate spaces: the internal food growing courtyard on the right and the uninterrupted flow of nature towards the hutongs on the left. Additionally, it highlights how nature can be enjoyed from the private balconies by looking through the screens, allowing residents to have a glimpse of the natural surroundings while maintaining privacy.
This zoom-in moment captures the proposal within the context of the housing blocks. In consideration of the neighboring flats, the proposal here is designed with a shorter height to ensure that the windows of the flats in the back are not obstructed. The residents of these flats can also enjoy views of the surrounding nature, which is deliberately left as unkept wilderness primarily for visual appreciation. This intentional design choice limits public access to preserve the tranquility and privacy of the residents without disrupting their living environment.

On the left, there are the semi-private balconies with double screens, offering privacy and an enhanced outdoor experience. The dwellings themselves are positioned in the center, and at the bottom, there is an undercroft space. Additionally, the image highlights the seamless integration of nature into the undercroft, creating connection between the built environment and the surrounding natural world.
This detailed view highlights the link between the proposal and Galaxy Soho. The first four levels of Galaxy Soho feature bridges that provide direct access to my building, allowing for easy entry and smooth transition for individuals moving from Galaxy Soho to the proposal.

GREEN CITY THREADS: CONNECTING BEIJING THROUGH NATURE AND COMMUNITY

My design proposal aims to create a strong sense of connection within the city by seamlessly incorporating elements of nature throughout the urban landscape. The lower level of the building serves as a pathway, allowing people to immerse themselves in nature while moving through the city, while the elevated streets in the sky and private screened balconies provide spaces for fostering meaningful connections and bonds among residents and the broader community.
