UN ISLAND

by Salaheldeen Elnour

In response to Britain’s current hostility to refugees, this proposal is a utopian vision situated in the heart of London as a starting point; both a sanctuary offering of strength and healing, but also a place of ambition and hope. The architectural design of the refuge exudes a sense of tranquillity and unity, inviting displaced individuals to transcend their struggles and thrive collectively. The design is made up of integrated modular units, intricately linked by meandering paths, blurring the lines between personal retreats and shared spaces, fostering a strong sense of community. Guided by the principles of equality, solidarity, and empowerment, this island city becomes a beacon of hope empowering refugees to reclaim their lives. Through collaborative efforts with the UN, governments, humanitarian organisations, and local communities, the utopia takes form, ensuring integration and comprehensive support for its residents. In time, the island city continues to grow along the river, eventually knitting itself into the fabric of London.
