PROJECT 3 - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, MANUFACTURING AND RETAIL FACILITY

by Amjad Butt

The project brief entailed the development of a multi-purpose site that encompassed a manufacturing facility, exhibition space/gallery area, R&D laboratory, and a supported retail space. The primary focus of this project was to provide a dedicated space for clients who embrace circular economy principles, specifically emphasising the reuse of waste to create products with extended life cycles, akin to the functions demonstrated in Project 1 and 2. Additionally, the site aimed to foster collaboration and serve as a networking hub for organisations committed to producing sustainable goods. The overarching objective was to showcase the potential of technology and innovation in commercialising sustainability, while actively supporting sustainable development goals. The buildings within the project were characterised by innovative construction technology, incorporating low-carbon materials such as wood fibre insulation, fire-resistant Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), thermally insulating glazing systems, ventilated Accoya timber cladding, and glulam columns. To ensure transparency and compliance, comprehensive environmental product declarations accompanied these materials, demonstrating their sustainability attributes and adherence to the BREEAM credit system. The design approach prioritised future-proofing, with sustainability serving as a guiding principle. Integral to the project was the revitalisation of the industrial brownfield site in South Bermondsey. The conceptual forms of the buildings were carefully devised to harmonise with the existing architectural context, seamlessly integrating the new structures. Consideration was given to the neighboring South East London Combined Heat and Power facility, ensuring functional compatibility and harmonious coexistence. Furthermore, the project embraced adaptive reuse, repurposing specific arches to create recreational spaces and maximising the site's potential. The project remained steadfast in its commitment to sustainability, aiming to showcase environmentally conscious practices and redefine the possibilities of the South Bermondsey site. By providing an integrated venue that encompassed manufacturing, exhibition, R&D, and retail spaces, the project sought to foster collaboration, encourage innovation, and facilitate the production of sustainable goods. Through these efforts, it aimed to contribute to the advancement of sustainable development goals, while revitalising and reimagining the potential of the South Bermondsey site.
