CARVING NEW OPPORTUNITIES

by Muhammad Farhan Uddin

The first proposal suggests several smaller interventions at the urban level creating a network of prototypes, while the second proposal results in a larger building to serve as a school and community center for both the new residents of the Foster and Partners’ masterplan and the existing community in West Silvertown. Both projects have stemmed from a deep research and understanding of the local environmental conditions, but more specifically target the high levels of pollution found in the Royal Docks site due to wind movement and in the future due to the new Silvertown tunnel. Each project follows a process of evidence-informed research and design, anchored in the data and the reality of the Royal Docks’ imminent development. Carving New Opportunities aims to better the environmental conditions around the masterplan whilst providing optimal internal conditions. The concept of carving the existing tower block was explored through a data-driven approach to provide better air movement throughout the new masterplan.
