FROZEN FIRE

by Carla Canestro

The large number of bars and restaurants in Dalston influenced my focus on the repurposing of waste glass for this project. My concept ‘Frozen Fire’ is largely inspired by the process of glass blowing and how the glass is melted into this liquid, formable substance, which is then moulded and cooled to capture a fluid, moving form as a solid piece of art. The heat required for glass blowing is another inspiration with the idea of the workspace being private, because it’s dangerous, but open for the public to view as a performative, mesmerising process, similar to gazing at a fire. Then from a fire, smoke forms rising in very fluid movements, which I want to capture in drawing people up from the “fire” to the smoke cloud as the sell space on the first floor. My concept is also inspired by hydroponic gardening, for which these glass blown pieces are being marketed, and the idea of having growing, changing plants in the space that are alive and emerging out of water, which is another fluid, glassy substance.
