The walled garden is a place to symbolise a haven and an alternative to our surroundings. It not only honours the local geology but is also a symbol of domestication and stability. It will enable the neighbourhood to recover from the scars caused by Naples’ Mafia gangs. The Earth’s Scream is a response to all of the strains put upon nature and the community who lives there. The intervention seeks to incorporate three primary functions into the fabric of Naples; firstly, cleaning the water from all the waste thrown into the water by the Mafia, a thermo-mineral hot water bath where water can naturally heal the fractured community, thirdly, to provide adaptable mixed-use homes amongst steam temples, which mark the point of where the earth releases its steam in the form of Geysers.
