SUBVERTING SLAVIC BORDERS: THE TRANSIENT GARDEN MERGING POLAND & UKRAINE

by Roksana Wyrwa

This design narrative unfolds along the border between Poland and Ukraine, where queues of stressed, displaced, and confused refugees capture the scene. The migrants' journey is filled with trauma, from beginning to end. In response to this challenging reality, this project endeavours to create a resilient community that not only provides a haven for refugees but also facilitates their healing and learning through a deep connection with nature. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Slavic folklore, the project envisions a transient garden that embodies the essence of legendary figures such as the Goddess Mokosz and Janosik, the Slavic Robinhood. Culture is further infused through the incorporation of traditional Slavic water and water rituals. By embracing nature and harnessing the power of these legends and rituals, the transient garden subverts the limitations imposed by man-made borders, paving the way for a self-sustaining collective living experience.
