The project brings focus towards organic waste in the City of Antwerp. It raises awareness about organic waste and its effects and opportunities for growth towards a more sustainable city. The concept of the project is set to eliminate current unsustainable organic waste management practices by harnessing organic waste as a resource. What is being proposed is a project that rethinks the relationships between organic waste, technology, environment, culture and society. The project consists of creating a space which collects local organic waste in Het Eilandje to transform it into compost. This compost will be then used in allotments that locals can rent out in this space for their own farming of food. The aim is to increase public participation in the processes of organic waste management in this community, as well as increase social interaction within the neighbourhood. Moreover, the compost can also be rewarded to public participants. As a result, recreation and education initiatives can evolve and emerge from this opportunity. For example, compost products can be used to support street and roof gardens. Lastly, a food hub and food market will be integrated into this project where locals can participate in workshops, cook or sell for the neighbourhood. This way we will be creating for this area of Antwerp, a space for social interaction. It is an innovative waste management system that diverts organic waste from the trash stream while promoting public engagement.
