CIRCULAR SOLUTIONS: RECYCLED FURNITURE, DEMOUNTABLE STRUCTURE, AND GREEN INNOVATION INCUBATOR FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

by Zuzanna Jodlowska

The presented projects embody circular economy principles and sustainable design, showcasing innovative approaches to creating a more environmentally friendly future. "Ciclo", the first project, addresses the issue of plastic waste by offering recycled plastic furniture designed with simplicity and resource efficiency in mind. The interlocking segments, made of bars and plates are held together with threaded rods and a few nuts and bolts, allowing for easy assembly, storage, and transport. The second project introduces a demountable structure that utilises scaffolding, sand, and bamboo to create a modular solution that emphasizes flexibility and simplicity. The materials used in the structure are carefully chosen to ensure reusability, recyclability, or biodegradability. At the end of its lifespan, the steel scaffolding is reused, while other materials are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. SE16 Works, the third project, represents a sustainable development that incorporates strategies to reduce carbon emissions and utilize low-carbon materials. Its centrepiece, the R&D Centre, functions as an incubator for recycling research and fosters innovation, offering collaborative spaces and specialised areas to facilitate the prototyping process. The design prioritises occupant well-being with features such as mixed-mode ventilation, abundant natural lighting, and automated shading systems.
