MOONWALK: THE ARCHITECTURE OF ASTRONOMY A CELESTIAL OBSERVATORY

by Angelique Hoarau

The concept was created with the intention of providing specifically engineered spaces, allowing for visitors to have a direct experience of the effects of celestial events and the moon on their surroundings. The pathways with slanted walls, roofs and timber posts offer spaces and concurrently moments to experience the moonlight at certain points in space and time. The individual pathways are designed to capture the predicted movement of the moon. However, where they intertwine and crossover allow for moments in space and time, through the experience of light and shadow to understand the fluctuating nature of the moon and our environment. Thus, every walk along each pathway will be a new experience. The observatory will comprise of a network of specially curated walkways and spaces with apertures designed to enable the viewing of celestial phenomena. Each walkway represents a different phase of the moon as it moves throughout the sky over the course of one year. The walkways undulate in accordance with the tidal changes that occur in Antwerp in the River Scheldt as a result of the gravitational pull of the moon.
