NEWHAM AQUATIC ACADEMY

by Anna Prideaux

The building industry is responsible for 40 per cent of global carbon emissions. The UK has pledged to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2050, to achieve this goal, a revolution is necessary for the building industry to rethink how buildings are designed, made and run. This design proposal responds to the environmental challenges we face by being a sustainable building built to withstand the increasing flood risk of the River Thames. The build uses locally sourced sustainable materials and generates all its energy from an extensive solar roofing system. Newham Aquatic Academy is an ecologically sustainable school, the first of its kind in London, to benefit the community of Newham. The school will be part of the West Silvertown development, improving and enhancing this new development. Newham Aquatic Academy has partnered with the Institute of Zoology, which will have a visiting biologist at the school teaching conservation science, including biodiversity survey work. The students will be involved with a Clean Seas Sails project run by Thames Water to improve water quality in the River Thames. The school's vision is to inspire students to connect with the natural world and pursue pathways to help the planet’s health.
