This proposal supports Peabody’s plan in creating new housing in Thamesmead. Currently, in the housing estate, there is about 225 homes, and this proposal aims to bring about 300 new homes. Based on the needs of the local residents, this development will provide a range of commercial spaces by introducing shops, groceries stores, entertainment space, offices and community centres/social space that brings fun to the area. This makes it safer due to the aspect of natural surveillance. The site will be a car free zone and the only vehicular road will be Hartslock drive that will lead to the underground parking space. Portsmeadow walk will be expanded and will become a pedestrian zone that will provide spaces for kids to play, people to cycle, eat, sit and relax. The existing underutilized courtyards will be transformed into functional spaces encouraging residents to become more socially and physically active and to forge a closer relationship to their community and nature. The Southmere lake frontage will be activated, hosting water activities to bring life to the area. This will all provide jobs for the local neighborhood which has been a struggle for some, especially after the pandemic.
