This year DS12 are situated on a former Oil Refinery located on the South Essex coast line on the Thames Estuary. The refinery at Coryton ceased operations in 2012 and has since been under deconstruction and demolition. We as a cohort have been set the challenge of proposing alternative uses for the site in terms of agriculture, industry and townscapes. Each project occupies a piece of the site and has built interactions between them regarding the two main drivers; agriculture and industry. The proposed Coryton Village of Ex//Crete will host a Wastewater Treatment Plant which will serve the entire population of the new town, as well as the surrounding areas of Canvey Island in the future, providing a new network of sewage management and treatment at the heart of the community. There is a constant life-cycle which exists within the Coryton Village of Ex//Crete. People flush their toilets, turn their taps and run their baths without sparing a thought as to where this used water ultimately ends up. This project aims to challenge that by making these waste water treatment processes not only vital infrastructure for our every day lives but how they can also be used to grow the food we eat, as well as heat and built the houses we live in.
