THE DOCKLAND'S HACKSPACE

by Giancarlo Albarello

Pontoon docks is a historically rich and rapidly growing power house of East London. The area around pontoon dock was designed to allow for ships to be raised out of the water onto pontoons as the name suggests, which explains the shape and design of the concrete containments of the dock. After the closure of nearby factories, the site was abandoned and has been left with a desire to work for the local community again. From this historical understanding a striking factor is deducted. This area must be re-purposed and rejuvenated to provide a positive and meaningful space for locals to utilised to re-use re-purpose and create new and innovative products. The glory of a living and breathing factory and production line must be brought back to the Docklands. The first integral space will be a recycling factory that will take residential waste and metamorphose it into a usable construction material that will make up the façade and the interior spaces. As time passes the area will become a beacon highlighting how we can recycle and re-purpose materials which have harmed the survival of the future generation can become a glimmer of hope.
