BAMBOOTOPIA: CONNECTED NETWORK THROUGH BAMBOO

by Hyunwoo Shim

The Coryton Refinery was the UK’s largest oil refiner with an area of approximately 370 acres. However, it was closed in 2012. Thousands of jobs have disappeared and turned gray with abandoned industrial facilities, waiting only for change. Inspired by the rapidly growing and self-spreading bamboo through the roots, the project envisions the use of bamboo to quickly green abandoned oil mill premises. Focusing on a former refinery at the mouth of the Thames, this project explores a sustainable and environmentally friendly future through agriculture and industry through bamboo. In particular, by utilizing bamboo as a building material and establishing infrastructure facilities in various ways and shapes, it will be operated as an interesting and attractive place.
