THE FAMILIAR HOME

by Gergana Georgieva

The Familiar Home proposes to resolve a contemporary issue in relation to the ongoing migrant crisis. The project aims to insert a new safe route for migrants crossing the English Channel and arriving by boat near the Brighton coast and create an essential step in making a new life in the United Kingdom. It addresses the current conditions in which children migrants have to live after arriving and, in this particular case, proposes a solution for the group of under-aged children, identified under the label ‘unaccompanied’ due to their lack of parents/guardians when found. The design intends to improve the living conditions for unaccompanied children and create a stronger community through its collective spaces. The essence of the Familiar Home lies in the humanitarian approach intended to resolve the complex sociological issues in Brighton. Furthermore, it adapts to the environmental conditions and proposes a safe and playful collective space for both migrants and locals.
