??A PLEASURE GARDEN FOR THE UNDERVALUED IN SOUTHWARK; SANAA SAVES SOUTHWARK

by Lamisah Abdal

Semester 1 project was a pleasure garden inspired by Le Secret Jardin Marrakech, in Morocco. Continuing on to Semester 2, I delved into researching permanent housing units based on the struggles of the characters in the film “Les Mise?rables”, which showed the lives and struggles of the immigrants in the ghetto city of Clichy-Sous-Bios, France, who loitered around the city due to lack of education and work opportunities. The narrative shows the sympathetic side of people who lack power, and are forced to confine to corrupt authoritative figures as there is no safe space for them or a way out. This reflects back to the interactions with Southwark own neighbourhoods which are deprived and lack social and econom- ic support and growth. This brought about the focus of my semester 2 project, which is primarily urban housing and a pleasure garden, combining research from semester 1, for neglected members of the local residents, where their built environment creates a sense of community and safety, encouraging stronger social interactions, and support between neighbours to build a self-sufficient community.
