LANDSCAPE OF LEISURE

by Emma Hafner

The Landscape of Leisure is a mid-rise, high-density housing proposal that responds to the country's economic and migrational pressures, causing an ever-widening wealth gap between the city-dwelling middle class and rural agrarian communities creating families in flux. The project aims to support and outweigh some of the pressures by bringing together young rural migrants and elderly visiting grandparents around the homes of one-child households in a landscape of leisure that redefines this diverse and transient group of people as a temporary family. This is articulated in a series of pigmented monolithic courtyard blocks that reintroduce various forms of play back into the domestic lives and allow for connections between neighbours and the site.

As we weren't able to go to Beijing, the video explores the culture of play and leisure in China. It was compiled using videos and documentaries of the daily lives of the people of Beijing.
