CATFORD PEOPLE'S PALACE

by Joshua Ricketts

Catford People’s Palace aims to enhance the existing civic quarter of Catford town centre, by improving access to Lewisham council facilities as well as the existing cultural offering of the site which houses a Grade II Listed Theatre Building. Set between the historic Rushey green interchange and a 1970s Lewisham Council chamber building. The idea of creating a new People’s Palace in Catford is so that it may serve as a precedent for other nodal points around the north and south circular roads in London in town centres which are currently dominated by large road interchanges. By creating destination locations around the periphery of London, transport interchanges can be located here and support the city's goal of a Low-Carbon Economy by encouraging public transport uses. Working with mostly existing structures, reducing the impact of any new proposals has been central to how the chance operation studies in line have informed this design.
