REWEAVE

by Anna Tabacu

REWEAVE follows the journey of fabric and textiles as a means of storytelling. The first part of the project draws from the long history of immigration in Brick Lane and its connection to the textile industry to produce a protest piece, in defiance of soulless new developments and gentrification. The main project focuses on the textile industry of the present, where tons upon tons of clothing and fabric get shipped out to landfills in South America to polute our atmosphere, creating a vicious cycle in an industry that thrives off of consumerism and endless fashion micro-seasons facilitated by the ease of online shopping. The Glasgow Rewoven facility, sits on the bank of the River Clyde, under the viaduct of the M8 motorway, takes over textile waste from the largest warehouse in the UK -which deals with online shopping returns- and repuropses them through use of chemical recycling. The recycled fabric is then woven and reused in fashion, furniture, and technical textiles, thus contributing to the circular economy.
