PRISON FOR PEACE

by Katarzyna Maskowicz

The philosophy of the design is to create a remedial prison for inmates reintegrating into society. The prison is the middle ground between prison and freedom. Its aim is to create an environment which would promote self-sustainability and benefit the physical and mental wellbeing of its inmates. Each inmate has their own farm which is an extension of his cell. This is to teach responsibility, ownership and independence. Furthermore, the urban farm not only provides food for the inmates, but the produce can also be sold to the community, this can help to fund the prison (reducing the burden on taxpayers) as well giving opportunity to prisoners to develop skills in commerce and working.

The prison is semi subterranean to blend into the parks natural setting. The aim is to be within nature but not to be overly disruptive to the publics access and experience of the existing park.
