WONDER HAMLETS

by Makbule Karadag

Wonder Hamlets takes inspiration from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to propose a more joyful hub for play in Poplar. Alice’s adventures are places fuelling playfulness and the imagination. Taking the lead from Alice’s adventures these have been adapted in Wonder Hamlets to offer an opportunity for audiences of all ages to immerse themselves in a surreal landscape of play.

Play is often restricted in urban areas; this is also the case for Tower Hamlets where no-ball-game-signs are prevalent. Signs such as this, forbidding ball games discourage play. Wonder Hamlets is a project, which acts as a provocation to the restriction of play by providing a considered place for children’s play, whilst giving ‘free reign to the imagination’ through an immersive, climbable and conceptual landscape.
