SHIP HOUSE COMMUNITY

by Daryl Dlodlo

Ships are currently littered around the rivers of Bangladesh. They end up in
places like Chittagong after being sold at the end of their life cycle by first world countries. Bangladesh normally breaks down the ships and recycles the metal.
With six different seasons in a year, Bangladesh is also prone to monsoons and flooding, meaning houses are easily destroyed and people’s lives are disrupted every year.
The project proposes using the ships that are already in the rivers as floating homes that can be moved to different docks throughout the year. The houses are built into a section of the hull with a floating farm built from the front of the ship. The houses would be completed with locally sourced bamboo.
The ship structure is already designed for strong weather though it will require maintenance every other year.
