PINEAPPLE WASTE COMMUNITY

by Almudena Tesorero Garcia

The aim of this project is to improve the notorious unsustainable pineapple industry in Costa Rica by taking advantage of the pineapple waste from existing factories. This proposal will provide workers with the opportunity to be entrepreneurs by creating an adjacent factory for manufacturing sheet material made from pineapple fibre composites. Workers will be able to use the sheet material to create double curved components which they can layer to make walls and canopies and gradually expand their community. The components are created by a double curvature system I explored in semester one by cutting slits in the corners at different angles and then pinching the corners in opposite directions to create different bends.
