URBAN FOREST

by Mihna Landin Johansson

A Forest school nursery typically functions in a natural deciduous environment, the challenge of this project was to try and emulate a similar environment in the middle of London. The proposed building is made out of layered cork, combined with a concrete skeleton, with trees enclosed in concrete cylinders, acting as pillars. The client’s main environment is the outdoors, with the interior functioning more as a back-up space rather than primary occupational space. This led to another criteria where the exterior of the structure should be “habitable” as well, further leading to a helix-like shape and ramp that is easy to walk on.Ultimately Urban Forrest is an attempt at creating a deciduous environment as close to a natural one as possible, in the middle of a great, urban city.
