THE SECOND CHANCE SHELTER

by Laura Vasile

This project is about food waste and homelessness. It celebrates the transformation of a waste product into a renewable source of energy. The main element of the design is the anaerobic digester generating biogas which is burned on-site to generate heat for the building and power the kitchen van. As well, it produces a nutritional compost used for the rooftop garden. The homelessness program revolves around the same principles le of working with food waste and producing meals to be served on site and around the local community, directly from the van. This scheme offers a job support and housing to one homeless person at a time. Overall, this scheme aims to ensures the continuity of that person in the local workplaces, while offering the moral support and guidance he/she needs to regain control over his/her life and ultimately become a competent and self reliant member of the community.
