ARTIST COLLABORATIVE STUDIO

by Zahra Iben Khayat Zouggari

The project consists of designing a building with living accommodation, a working area, and a display area for the public. The client is Japanese, the Noguchi designed Akari lanterns Ozeki & Co, thus, I was influenced by the Japanese architecture, notably Tadao Ando whose distinguished brutal concrete designs shaped modern architecture. Furthermore, I was inspired by the brutalist movement, a minimalist construction technique that illustrates bare building materials and apparent structural elements showcasing impressive aesthetic designs.

Moreover, one of my inspirations was the design by Lina Bo Bardi, SESC Pompéia. I designed external concrete walkways connecting the display, and working area with the block of living space.
I believe that a concrete façade would suit London’s environment since the material has excellent water resistance characteristics, great for London’s rainy days. Lastly, rammed concrete has soundproof capacities, needed since the building is situated in Pott Street, Bethnal Green, often busy, and loud.
